VIDEOS: Iron Dome Success Shielded Israeli Population Center, Will Have Regional Impact

After the first few minutes of Operation Pillar of Defense, in which the Israeli Air Force targeted Hamas's "Chief of Staff" Ahmed Jabari and largely eliminated Hamas's carefully-built stockpile of advanced Fajr 5 missiles, the Iran-backed terror group sought to rebuild its shattered morale by blanketing Israeli population centers with rockets and mortars.

Those efforts were complicated by the success of the Iron Dome missile defense system, which largely succeeded in shielding Israeli civilians from Hamas's missile barrages, each of which constituted an individual war crime. The system managed to intercept 80 to 90 percent of the missiles against which it was deployed, with Iron Dome's sophisticated mapping technology letting pass hundreds of other missiles which it calculated would land in open areas. Journalists and analysts described how the system "managed to make Tel Aviv and other cities nearly impregnable" to Hamas launched thousands or rockets and mortars. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak described Iron Dome's success as "unprecedented."

Iron Dome's success is likely to reverberate geopolitically and strategically. Israel's regional adversaries, first and foremost Iran and its proxies, have long sought to establish a balance of terror via demonstrated ability to target Israeli civilians in Israel and abroad. The assumptions upon which that balance of terror was built will have to be rethought in the aftermath of Operation Pillar of Defense.
